Hours to Go - Sunday 27th June - Fact: You will have a brilliant time in Canada!

 

1 Days to Go - Saturday 26th June - To Boldly Go ... Both Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Scotty (James Doohan) were Canadians.

3 Days to Go - Thursday 24th June - Canadian singer, Celine Dion, represented Switzerland in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 and won with the song "Ne partez pas sans moi".  

4 Days to Go - Wednesday 23rd June - How to Escape form a Bear

  1. If the bear doesn't see you, make your presence known and back away.
  2. If the bear is about to attack you, do not run - remain still (a bear can run much faster than you).
  3. If the bear attacks stricke back with anything to hand, go for its eyes or snout.

8 Days to Go - Saturday 19th June - Don't Try This at Home! In October 1901 63 year-old school-teacher Annie Edson Taylor became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive.

9 Days to Go - Friday 18th June - Canada was named after the French Explorer Jacques Cartier in 1535.

10 Days to Go - Thursday 17th June - Around 390 tonnes of gold have been taken from the Klondike region of the Yukon since the Klondike gold rush of 1896.

11 Days to Go - Wednesday 16th June - There are about 2 million lakes in Canada.

12 Days to Go - Tuesday 15th June - There are 6 Canadian Ice Hockey teams that play in the National Hockey League (NHL) - Montreal Canadiens, Ottowa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oliers and Vancouver Canucks. Currently the NHL has players from 18 different countries, with the majority (52% 07–08 NHL season) coming from Canada. 

13 Days to Go - Monday 14th June - Canada has 42 National Parks. The oldest National Park is Banff, in Alberta.  It was created in 1885 as Rocky Mountain Park.

14 Days to Go - Sunday 13th June - Today is the Canadian Grand Prix from Montreal.  It finished as a British 1, 2 with Lewis Hamilton winning and Jenson Button coming in second.

15 Days to Go - Saturday 12th June - Lacrosse is the National Summer Sport and Ice Hockey is the National Winter Sport of Canada.

16 Days to Go - Friday 11th June - The World Cup begins. Canada did not qualify for this year's football World Cup. They finished bottom of their qualifying group behind Honduras and Mexico with only two draws from six games. Their top scorer was Ali Gerba.

17 Days to Go - Thursday 10th June - The Trans-Canada Highway stretches from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia and is 7604 km long!

18 Days to Go - Wednesday 9th June - Vancouver and Vancouver Island are two of several North American locations named after George Vancouver, the British Royal Navy officer who explored the Pacific Northwest coast of North America between 1791 and 1794.

19 Days to Go - Tuesday 8th June - Mount Logan in the Yukon Territory is Canada's tallest peak at 5,959 metres.

20 Days to Go - Monday 7th June - On the 7th May 1986 Canadian Patrick Morrow became the first person to climb all the "Seven Summits", the highest mountain on each continent. 

21 Days to Go - Sunday 6th June - Canada is the third largest diamond producing nation in the world. 

22 Days to Go - Saturday 5th June - Canadian Bryan Adams spent a British record 16 weeks at number one with the 1991 power ballad "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" from the hit film Robin Hood: Price of Thieves (Channel 5 tomorrow night). 

23 Days to Go - Friday 4th June - 10% of the world's forests are in Canada.

24 Days to Go - Thursday 3rd June - Sir John A. Macdonald was the first Prime Minister of Canada. He was born in Glasgow in 1815 and spent two different spells as PM. Firstly between 1867 and 1871 and then again from 1878 until his death in 1891. The current Prime Minister is Stephen Harper, who assumed office on 6th February 2006, becoming Canada's 22nd PM.

25 Days to Go - Wednesday 2nd June - the name "Canada" comes from the Huron and Iroquois word "Kanata" meaning "village".

26 Days to Go - Tuesday 1st June - Although Ottawa is the capital city, Toronto is Canada's largest city with a population of 2.5 million. Scotland's largest city Glasgow has a population of only 580,000.

27 Days to Go - Monday 31st May - Canada has the world's longest coastline.

28 Days to Go - Sunday 30th May - Canada has two official languages English and French.

29 Days to Go - Saturday 29th May -  The capital city of Canada is Ottawa in the province of Ontario.

30 Days to Go - Friday 28th May - Canadians drive on the right.

31 Days to Go - Thursday 27th May -  Canada is made up of 10 provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan and 3 territories : Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories

32 Days to Go - Wednesday 26th May -  Canada has a population of 34.1 million, making it the 36th most populated country in the world.  The UK has a population of 62 million (22nd).

33 Days to Go - Tuesday 25th May - Canada is the second largest country in the world

34 Days to Go - Monday 24th May - Victoria Day (Canada) 

This day also marks our official 'Countdown to Canada'. With only 34 days to go until our Explorer Scouts, our website will mark this countdown with each day (that we remember) adding a different fact, anecdote or bit of trivia about Canada.
